Some Millennials may not remember this, but back in the late 1990s Justin was not always the coolest kid on the block, but then came the 00s, and he just knocked it out of the park with his MJ-like moves, actual singing ability, and well, swagger. With fame often comes a new obsession, and Timberlake’s were horses, and like very few single cowboys out there, Justin rode on the wave of his worldwide success straight into the 2010s. After he married Jessica Biel in 2012, he quietly retreated into the family life and was out of the spotlight for so long that even the people who never considered JT particularly cool noticed he was gone. Now that he’s back with his new single “Filthy”, we’d like to take a closer look at how the Prince of Pop has changed over the years.
The 1990s and *NSYNC
Justin Timberlake is a Mickey Mouse Club alumni, along with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and JC Chasez. He performed at the Club from 1993 to 1995 before forming a boy band *NSYNC with Chasez, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone, and Chris Kirkpatrick. *NSYNC was one of the hottest pop groups of the decade, and hits like “I Want You Back”, “Bye Bye Bye”, and “It’s Gonna Be Me”, their PopOdyssey tour that earned $90 million, and countless screaming teenage girls all over the world, helped them cement their place in music history in addition to receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2017.
Early Solo Career
In 2002, JT released his first solo hit song “Like I Love You”, followed by his debut album “Justified”, which sold more than 7 million copies worldwide. The not-so-innocent Justin won two Grammy awards in 2004 for Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance after the Super Bowl half-time show incident with Janet Jackson, in which he accidentally ripped off a portion of her costume, exposing her breast. “FutureSex/LoveSounds” was released in 2005, and it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart. “SexyBack”, “My Love”, and “What Goes Around Comes Around” are arguably Justin’s most popular and praised songs that showed the world he had grown into a bonafide music powerhouse.
His Acting Career
Over the years, Justin has shown an array of talents that include noticeable acting skills. His performances in Alpha Dog (2006) and Black Snake Moan (2006) didn’t get much critical acclaim, but Timberlake did get his big acting break in 2007 as young King Arthur in Shrek the Third alongside Mike Myers. One of the most notable performances came in 2010 in The Social Network about the creation of Facebook, where he played Sean Parker, a real-life internet tycoon. In 2011, he starred in Bad Teacher with Cameron Diaz and Friends with Benefits with Mila Kunis, and also had a leading role in the 2013 thriller Runner Runner starring Ben Affleck.
Back To Music
In early 2013, Timberlake released “The 20/20 Experience”, his long-awaited album which quickly found its way to the top of the album charts thanks to a hit single “Suit & Tie”. October 2013 saw the release of a follow-up album “The 20/20 Experience 2 of 2”, but received very little critical acclaim. In 2016, JT released another hit song “Can’t Stop the Feeling”, featured in Trolls where he was an executive music producer, which went straight to No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100. His latest work, an album called “Man of the Woods“ is set for release this Friday with singles “Filthy” and “Supplies” fueling its release. From his teenage years to his mid-30s, Justin has given so much to the entertainment industry that we can’t help but have high expectations of everything he does next. Looking forward to watching Justin Timberlake take on the Super Bowl Half Time Show this Sunday!
