With the best and the very worst of 2016 behind us, we can now look forward to another year of brand new music! Not even two weeks into the year and there have already been a handful of amazing releases setting the pace for endless possibilities. 2017 is slated to be a great year in music! With artists like Drake and Kehlani already making noise with buzz-worthy singles and anticipated comebacks from the likes of Katy Perry, Trey Songz and Lorde, we’re here for everything that this year has to offer! With music continually evolving with the influence of today’s culture and arts, these artists have more to prove than ever before! What type of sounds will set the pace of 2017? Which artists will impact this year’s direction? Let’s check out this year’s most anticipated albums below!
Drake – More Life (Early 2017)
And Drake just stands for do right and kill everything. Drake’s 2016 release Views proved that Drizzy is one of today’s most monumental hip-hop artist’s with his undeniable cultural dominance. With an ever-changing discography, his forthcoming project More Life will be another appropriate follow-up adding to his successful streak. Back in November, the Canadian rapper released a few cuts off the project, including the top 10 hit “Fake Love”, giving us a taste of what is to come. Delivering a smooth, stripped down sound, I’m definitely looking forward to more music from Drake. It’s always interesting to see/hear the response to his work.
Iggy Azalea – Digital Distortion (TBD)
Just like most of us, Iggy Azalea also had a terrible 2016! Back in 2015 I-G-G-Y met a slew of negativity and backlash fueling the comeback single “Team”. However, after a very public (and nasty) break-up with her ex-fiance Nick Young, the Australian rapper decided to delay the release of her sophomore project Digital Distortion. With so much to prove, Iggy Azalea is hitting the studio with the Ignorant Art producers that helped her catch headlines back in 2012. Digital Distortion includes collaborations with the likes of French Montana, Verse Simmonds, Zedd and YG! Having such a nice line-up, we’re looking forward to I-G-G-Y’s comeback!
Zara Larsson – International Debut (TBD)
In 2016, Zara Larsson made her debut with the widely received hit “Never Forget You” featuring MNEK. Following with singles such as “Lush Life” and “Ain’t My Fault”, this 18-year old Swedish singer has set the pace for an amazing debut. Between her undeniable swag and confidence and that unique and powerful voice, I’m sure Zara has what it takes to make an impact in 2017!
Kehlani – SweetSexySavage (January 27th)
Oakland R&B singer Kehlani has been under the radar for quite a while now. With a handful of well-received mixtapes and a slew of equally successful singles, it’s hard to believe that Kehlani is just making her debut! The full length project SweetSexySavage, slated for January 27th, has already delivered the personality and creativity of an emerging generation via singles “Gangsta”, “CRZY” and “Distraction”. We’re definitely looking forward to what Kehlani has up her sleeves.
Chris Brown – Heartbreak On A Full Moon (TBD)
Not even a couple weeks into the year and our favorite R&B artist has caught headlines over controversy. However, scandal is not the only thing Chris Brown will be bringing to the table in 2017. Last year the singer announced his ninth studio album Heartbreak On The Moon. With the release of “Grass Ain’t Greener”, I became underwhelmed by the direction of this project. However, most recently Breezy has teamed up with Usher and Gucci Mane for the electronic earworm “Party” proving that he still has what it takes to hit the airwaves. With that said, I’m looking forward to the Royalty follow-up and what it has in store!
GOOD Music – Cruel Winter (TBD)
After four years of rumors and speculation, GOOD Music has finally confirmed the release of their highly anticipated collaborative project Cruel Winter. The project, slated for release this summer, follow’s 2012 Cruel Summer which made such a huge impact on hip-hop in its time. Since then, the GOOD Music gang has undergone some major changes including the addition of Travi$ Scott, Desiigner and Tyga and of course the new direction of President and frontman Pusha T. Considering these factors and the questionable genius of Kanye West, there’s no doubt that the GOOD Music family will successfully strike again! Cruel Winter is slated to blaze this summer!
Nicki Minaj – TBD
It’s been awhile since Nicki Minaj released her monumental project The Pinkprint. Since then, the “Anaconda” rapper has gone through two very public break-ups (ie. Safaree and Meek Mill) from men who impacted her career in very different ways. While long-time boyfriend Safaree reportedly wrote for Nicki over the years, rapper Meek Mill low-key downplayed the Queen B and all she has to offer. Moving forward, Nicki has more to prove than ever and I’m sure she has what it takes to continue to claim that #1 spot! We’re looking forward to the next era in this Minaj!
Fergie – Double Dutchess (Spring 2017)
It’s been over ten years since Fergie made an impact with her debut album The Dutchess. The album spewed 5 hit singles making Fergie the international solo artist she’s known as today. However, after 2006, the Los Angeles singer took a break -a really long break. Fast forward twelve years and Fergs has returned to the ever-changing and evolving music industry with cuts like “L.A. Love (LA, LA)”, “M.I.L.F$” and “Life Goes On”, proving that she still has what it takes to swag it out and meet success. Can Fergie Double the Dutchess!? Only time will tell!
Tinashe – Joyride (Spring 2017)
Tinashe has been everywhere and back on a joyride of her own. Upon the release of “Player” featuring Chris Brown, we became excited for her sophomore album Joyride. However, following that single came a slew of other well-received singles (ie. “Party Favors”, “Secret”, “Ride Of Your Life”, “Super Love” and “Company”) all of which showcased the different sounds that the Bay Area singer is capable of. Tinashe even bought some time with the release of the mixtape Nightride. However, at this point we just want to soak in the very over-delayed project. I’m sure the wait is very much worth it! Joyride is due for release this Spring.
Trey Songz – Tremaine (TBD)
Trigga will be making a return in 2017! Following the success of 2014’s Trigga and Trigga: Reloaded, Trey Songz took a very long hiatus. Undoubtedly, the creative energy was being reserved for the forthcoming project Tremaine, which will see release from the R&B balladeer in 2017: “I got a very much distinctive vision for how I want it to be taken in,” he explained in a recent radio interview. “Everybody takes everything in so fast and then they’re on to the next thing, so I want to figure out how to hold people’s attention.”
Taylor Swift – TBD
Taylor going hip-hop!? Yes, yes indeed! 2017 is all about pushing the boundaries in which this singer is no stranger to! Following her last album, a gift that kept giving, Taylor Swift is finally ready to follow-up and there’s a lot to consider. Since then, the self-published song writer has been publicly humiliated by Kanye West once again (ie. “I made that b**ch famous”), undergone another public break-up with ex-boyfriend Calvin Harris and has curated enough drama for any daytime television series in between. It’s no question that T Swift has enough fuel to fire a new project in 2017! According to reports, the singer has hit the studio with the likes of Drake and then Kanye West to catch inspiration for the new project! We’re looking forward to what this dysfunctional mess spews in 2017! Forizzle T-Swizzle!
Lorde – TBD (Spring 2017)
Most recently I have been asked which voices have been monumental to the direction of this generation’s music and for a while, I was unsure. However, there’s UK singer/songwriter Lorde. Back in 2013, Lorde made a huge impact on pop music with her brilliant debut Pure Heroine. Since then, this talent has been in the studio working on her return to the music scene and this time around she has so much to prove. With a brand spawning intelligence, genre-bending and brilliantly layered pop music, we’re looking forward to what Lorde has in store for us! I’m sure it will be nothing short of amazing.
Big Sean – I Decided. (February 3rd)
Following the release of Dark Sky Paradise and a collaborative project with girlfriend Jhene Aiko, Big Sean is ready to follow-up with a brand new project titled I Decided. Thus far the Detroit rapper has released the booming singles “Bounce Back” and “Moves”. However, I’m looking forward to where Sean Don takes us in 2017. While Sean always delivers quality music, he also delivers a new feel that challenges the expectations of his previous work. With Dark Sky Paradise arguably being Sean’s best solo project to date, he has so much to prove. I Decided is due for release February 3rd.
Katy Perry – TBD
The queen of pop is ready to make a return to music! It’s been a while since Katy topped the charts with the likes of “ROAR” and “Dark Horse”. Since then Katy has made an impact with the smooth single “Rise”. However, there’s so much more in store for this era. Every time Katy comes around, she tops the chart with impressive pop music and an entire creative slate of spectacle. With all of her social media whited-out and clear for a new period, we’re super excited for what Katy Perry has in store for 2017!
