New Music: Katy Perry – “Rise”

katy-perry-rise-cover-art-640x640Britney Spears isn’t the only pop singer returning to the scene today! Katy Perry comes swinging with a new single titled “Rise”. The track, which she recorded to tie in with the upcoming Summer Olympics, is an inspirational ballad about overcoming obstacles in order to “rise”. “Cause when, when the fire’s at my feet again
And the vultures all start circling / They’re whispering, “you’re out of time.” / But still, I rise,” she belts over the moving production. Katy Perry wrote “Rise” after years of feeling “a need for our world to unite:”

This is a song that’s been brewing inside me for years, that has finally come to the surface. I was inspired to finish it now, rather than save it for my next album, because now more than ever, there is a need for our world to unite … I know that together we can rise above the fear – in our country, and around the world. I can’t think of a better example than the Olympic athletes, as they gather in Rio with their strength and fearlessness, to remind us how we ALL can come together, with the resolve to be the best we can be. I hope this song can inspire us to heal, unite, and rise together.

Upon the release of the song, NBC immediately announced its choice of the song as an anthem for their coverage of the 2016 Rio Olympics, with syncs planned across the network’s platforms. Perry applauded their decision, referencing the Olympic athletes’ inspiring strength and perseverance:

I can’t think of a better example than the Olympic athletes, as they gather in Rio with their strength and fearlessness, to remind us how we ALL can come together, with the resolve to be the best we can be. I hope this song can inspire us to heal, unite, and rise together. I am honored that NBC Olympics has chosen to use it as an anthem before and during the Rio Games.

“Rise” is nice and all but I’m ready for the heavy-hitting pop tracks Katy Perry’s known for! Give me some “Dark Horse” some “California Gurls”! What do you think?Listen to “Rise” and sound off in the comments below!
