New Music: Is Kanye West’s “Facts” The First Fail Of 2016?
Kanye West has one challenge.
As we await the highly anticipated album SWISH, Kanye West kicks off 2016 with “Facts”, his remix to Drake & Future’s “Jumpan”. On the track, Kanye West raps about his success with Adidas over Drake’s success with Nike’s Air Jordan. “If Nike ain’t had Drizzy, man, they wouldn’t have had nothing,” he spits over the Metro BoominxSouthside production. While the track ensures Kanye West as one of the generation’s biggest influencers, it doesn’t impress me one bit. For the first time in a while, Kanye jumped back in the scene with a sound that actually follows the most recent trends in music but the context is not clever, but rather mediocre. While it’s just a diss track, it’s very unimpressive. The Kanye that fans learned to love made meaningful music that impacted music culture altogether and that’s the Kanye everyone misses. Upon reviewing 2016’s most anticipated projects, I not only realized that I lost my overall interest in SWISH but when it drops Kanye will face one challenge: Getting back to meaningful music that everyone else will imitate in return. That’s all we want from Kanye West in 2016. Good music. What do you think? Did Kanye West’s “Facts” impress you or is it, in fact, the first fail of 2016? Sound off in the comments below!
