Big Sean – ‘Dark Sky Paradise’ [Album Review]
After a couple weeks of anticipation, Big Sean’s third studio album Dark Sky Paradise is here! Today, established artists often lose momentum after reaching their peak in the first few years of their careers. After the release of Finally Famous, other than features on tracks such “Clique” and “Control”, it seemed like the Detroit rapper could have been going down the same road. However, the release of Dark Sky Paradise has proved that Big Sean isn’t going down that way! The album opens up with “Dark Sky (Skyscrapers)” a high-energy reflective piece where Big Sean snaps setting the pace of the rest of the album. Sean teams up with Drake on another hard-hitter titled “Blessings” and Kanye West on another one of the album’s highlights, “All Your Fault”. After teaming up with DJ Mustard and E-40 on the 2014-hit “I Don’t F*ck With You” and Chris Brown and Ty Dolla $ign on a smooth track titled “Play No Games” which samples Guy’s ’80s single “Piece of My Love”, we enter the heart of the storm with “Paradise”, a hard-hitting track where Sean reflects on his current establishments. Big Sean seeks to inspire on smooth, low-energy tracks such as “Win Some, Lose Some” and “Stay Down” before teaming up with Jhene Aiko on a smooth and seductive track titled “I Know” and another reflective piece titled “Deep” featuring Lil Wayne. Big Sean exits with another inspirational track titled “One Man Can Change The World” featuring John Legend and a heart-felt “Outro”. The deluxe version of the album album, Big Sean teams up with PARTYNEXTDOOR on an upbeat-tack titled “Deserve It”, girlfriend Ariana Grande on a smooth love song similar to “Play No Games” titled “Research” and another smooth track titled “Platinum and Wood”. Overall, Big Sean has provided fans and critics with a confident, well-developed project that proves that he is growing as a rapper. Teaming up with Kanye West and producers such as DJ Mustard, Mike Will-Made It and Vinylz Big Sean delivers R&B inspired hooks with complex, crisp and enjoyable pop-felt sounds. Keeping it consistent, the Detroit rapper delivers bars consisting of his witty and unique flow. The content of this album combined with Kanye’s production makes this album a success proving that Big Sean is here to stay! Being a fan of his last album Hall Of Fame, I’m excited for the success of Dark Sky Paradise and I look forward to watching Big Sean grow!
