Iggy Azalea – “The New Classic” [Album Review]
Today Australian-American rapper Iggy Azalea released her debut album, The New Classic. “I think people think of classic and they think of a Nas record or a Jay-Z record or The Chronic, what makes something classic is when you hear it and you have that moment that is a time capsule. When I say ‘The New Classic,’ I just want to make records that give you that moment for fans that they can remember where they were when they heard it.”, she explained. The record is a perfect collection of 15 of Iggy’s pop/hip-hop inspired tacks. The album kicks off with “Walk The Line”, “Don’t Need Yall” and “100”; three tightly-produced, sentimental tracks that set the pace for the rest of the album. Following these intro tracks are Iggy’s most successful singles “Change Your Life” ft. T.I. and “Fancy” ft. Charlie XCX. Additional tracks include “Impossible Is Nothing“, “Lady Patra” ft. Movado, “Fuck Love” and “Rolex” all pop-inspired tracks that showcase Iggy’s unique flow! My favorite tracks off the album include’s the 90s-pop-fused track, “New Bitch”, and the Rita Ora/Katy Perry collaboration “Black Widow“. While the albums guest appearances are slightly random, they serve as appropriate. Overall, I believe that Iggy has a solid debut on her hands. While the album will surely be a success overseas, being an Australian female rapper, I wonder how the album will perform in the United States. Although Iggy is a rapper, the album is pop-felt. I would like to see Iggy explore more urban and hip-hop inspired genres! I guess we’ll get that next time around! Check out some of the album’s tracks below!
